Photography and Impressionism ONLINE ART BREAK

Sun, 27.02.2022
16:00 - 17:30
Look forward to an exciting topic that you have probably never seen before: the interplay of photography and painting!
"A New Art. Photography and Impressionism" in the Museum Barberini starts here and illuminates the development of the then completely new medium with over 150 photographs. In the 19th century, numerous photographers chose the same motifs as the Impressionist painters: the forest of Fontainebleau, the cliffs of Étretat or the modern metropolis of Paris. They too studied the changing light situations, the seasons and weather conditions. From the beginning, photography also pursued an artistic ambition. Its relationship to painting was marked by both competition and influence until the First World War. The exhibition examines photography around 1900 on its way to becoming an autonomous art form and sheds light on its complex relationship to painting. Further info at
